AMMAN —
Blue Fig has become the quintessential hangout in
West Amman, almost becoming an icon of the Abdoun social scene. From teenagers
to families to young adults, Blue Fig’s clientele base is wide and diverse. Its
branding is also distinct; practically anyone can pick out a Blue Fig menu by
the font alone.

This café, restaurant and bar offers an interesting mishmash of
cuisines. From Greek-inspired dishes to Italian meals, to burgers, Blue Fig has
a little sample of everything.
Something that Blue Fig has become well known for over the
years is its art installations. The eatery regularly hosts local artists and
displays their works, which can be purchased. Blue Fig is now known for its
support for the arts as much as it is for its food. Diners are surrounded by
art works as they enjoy their meals.

To make sure you is served promptly, it is important to know
when peak times are. That is, if you are in rush to be served. On slow days,
the service is fast and waiters have time to give you your due attention. The
same cannot be said during rush hour.
Due to how popular the place has become, it is not unusual
to struggle to find a table if you choose peak hours without a reservation.
For those with dietary preferences, needs and restrictions,
the menu mentions whether dishes are healthy, gluten-free, dairy-free,
vegetarian, contain nuts, or are sugar-free.

Before expanding into the institution it is today, Blue Fig
was better known for its breakfast and brunch options. Some still have fond
memories of eating Blue Fig manaqueesh on weekends and school holidays. The
breakfast menu includes eggs, avocado toast, pancakes, hearty dishes to fuel
your day.
My favorite item on the menu by far is the Athenian Myth.
Perfect to be shared or to be eaten alone, this dish is a “Figgza” (the Blue
Fig equivalent of a pizza) that consists of tomato pesto sauce, sautéed
spinach, roasted pine nuts and feta cheese. It is light but also perfectly
satisfying. Eating this dish is like taking a mini Greek vacation.

Another distinct dish is the Samurai Ginger Steak Salad. It
is a rocca, spinach salad with egg noodles, soy dressing, pickled ginger, and
marinated grilled steak. The noodles make this dish stand out as more than an
average salad; it may easily be a meal in itself. The dish has a slight touch
of spice to it, not so much as to be overpowering, but enough to add a unique
touch to it.

I also have a particular soft spot for its burgers. I
managed to eat my way through practically every burger-related dish on the menu
over the years, but one I continue to return to the most is the New Orleans
Blues. It is hearty and filling, and a welcome departure from the typical
classic burger.
Another distinct feature of Blue Fig is that it functions as
a bakery, so customers can buy the breads and pastries they enjoyed to take
home. With sourdough bread, cookies and a variety of other baked goods, the
pleasure of eating at Blue Fig can continue at home.

Blue Fig, I would say, is a restaurant many feel nostalgic
about. It is a fixture of the community, as evidenced by its large clientele
base, and one of the first options that pops into people’s minds when
considering possible places to dine. It is a restaurant that has managed to
maintain its lure and is likely to continue to do so for many years to come.
