A recent study has shown that adding potassium to one’s diet can help control high blood pressure.
According to the American Journal of Physiology, researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada, while studying the impact of various foods on heart function and blood pressure, discovered that excessive sodium intake—such as that found in fast food, sausages, salty snacks, and processed foods—leads to increased blood pressure, especially in men.

They also observed that women's bodies react less strongly to excess sodium. However, adding potassium to the diet for both men and women helps lower blood pressure, even with high salt consumption.
The researchers explained that potassium can be naturally obtained through foods such as bananas, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, avocados, beans, and lentils. Following a diet rich in these foods helps to:
Maintain electrolyte balance (electrically charged minerals in the body)
Reduce the strain on the heart
Lower the risk of developing high blood pressure
Numerous studies have shown that potassium is one of the most essential elements for maintaining cardiovascular health. It also plays a critical role in reducing calcium loss from the body, thereby benefiting bone health. Potassium contributes to maintaining the body's alkaline environment, which enhances bone density, and plays a key role in muscle contraction and relaxation—especially the heart muscle.
Health experts also highlight potassium’s role in preventing kidney stones, as potassium citrate helps reduce calcium levels in the urine. Additionally, potassium is considered essential in treating fluid retention in the body.
