AMMAN — Prices of electronic devices are expected
to drop by some 15 percent, according to Hatem Al-Zoubi representative of the
electrical and home appliances sector at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC),
as freight rates continue to fall, and “the cost of goods in the countries of
origin, has decreased as well.”

That makes “retailers of electronic devices face a
very alarming and worrisome situation,” Zoubi said.
“They will have to sell the large stock of goods
accumulated in warehouse at the new, lower, prices, due to the sharp decrease
in sales this year,” he elaborated.
According to Zoubi, “the electronics sector has
witnessed a harsh summer due to inflation, which has stricken the kingdom in
light of the Russian war on Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic.”
At the same time, “the weak purchasing power of
Jordanians and high cost of living” were blamed by him for the “market’s inactivity”.
Since “the electronics sector is linked with other
commercial activities, especially housing and construction, which have been
witnessing a difficult situation for too long”, Zoubi urged the concerned
authorities to grant tax exemptions to the sector.
“The government granted tax exemption for some types
of electronic goods, but we request further tax exemptions and, most
importantly, that taxes be deducted after the direct selling, not before,” he
stressed.
“The Central Bank
has provided soft loans to retailers and we hope it delays premiums, which are
due by both retailers and employees, until the end of the year, as this would
stimulate the market,” he said.
