AMMAN — The
number of visitors to
Ajloun and Tell Mar Elias Monastery increased by 50
percent during the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021,
according to Director of Ajloun Tourism Directorate Mohammad Aldeek.

Aldeek told
Jordan News that the
increase may be attributed to the measures taken by the
Ministry of Tourism at
tourist sites following the government’s decision to relax the COVID-19
restrictions, as well as to the improved services in the area, and the events
and activities organized to attract visitors, such as “handicraft shops, plays
for children and families, and some religious activities”.
He added that the “moderate and breezy
weather in the north, especially in Ajloun, is a good reason for people to
visit it”.
“Moreover, all investment projects and
tourist activities are back to their normal activity, much as they were before
COVID-19, if not better, as about six additional establishments have joined the
tourism sector in Ajloun since then,” Aldeek said.
Around 300 employees are currently working in
all tourist establishments in Ajloun, most of them Jordanians, he said, adding:
“In 2021, around 190,000 people visited Ajloun Castle. During the first quarter
of 2021, 13,000 people visited Ajloun Castle, while 26,000 visitors visited
during the same period of 2022.”
Ajloun Governorate was visited by 2 million in
2021, but “the directorate expects around 4 million visitors this year, with
the cable car project,” said Aldeek, adding that “the upcoming season is
promising for the tourism sector.”
“We enhanced and rehabilitated the
governorate’s main roads, and are expecting many investments in the near
future,” so Ajloun is expected to “be a main tourist destination for people in
the upcoming period”, he said.
