AMMAN — Prices of cosmetics and
skin care products increased by 30 percent since the
beginning of the year because of a rise in the cost of freight and raw material
used in manufacturing makeup and beauty treatment, a syndicate spokesperson
said.

Sami Bosheh of the General Syndicate for Beauty
Parlor Owners said the increased freight prices was not limited to Jordan, but
global as a result of skyrocketing fuel prices.
“It affected the prices of all imported products,
not just cosmetics,” he told
Jordan News.
Bosheh explained that the price of beauty products
increased in their country of origin because “cosmetic factories have increased
their prices due to a rise in the prices of raw material for cosmetics and
skincare products.”
“For now, the shops still have products in
stock and
the increase in prices is not yet noticeable in the market,” he pointed out.
But he added companies will soon run out of their stock.
Bosheh predicted that beauty parlors may hike prices
as well, partly due to an increase in electricity and lease. He said the shops
do not abide by price ceilings, considering the differing prices among
Jordanian neighborhoods.
A procurement official in a local cosmetics shop,
who insisted on anonymity, said the increase in prices of cosmetics was partly
due to a rise in customs and sales tax.
“The custom fees and sales tax rose in parallel with
the higher cost of shipments,” he told
Jordan News.
He said the increase in the prices of products
started this year, when manufacturing factories increased their prices. But the
official insisted that the increase locally is approximately between 5 to 15
percent, “not more”.
“The prices could increase to 20 percent in the next few
months, but I don’t believe they will reach 30 percent,” He added.
