Minister of Energy, Saleh Kharabsheh, said gas production at Risha field was suspended after the expiration of the agreement with the Risha power plant.

A previous statement by the ministry, however, had stated that “a temporary halt due to the end of the operational lifetime of the Risha Electric Power Plant”.

Economist Hashem Aqel told Jordan News that the purchase will “serve a future plan to build an industrial zone near the border with Iraq”.

“It will also be useful for the planned Iraqi power link with Jordan,” he added.

Aqel noted that “if the government purchases all power plants, it would be more feasible and profitable.”

Economist and energy specialist Amer Al-Showbaki told Jordan News that the purchase is “a step in the right direction, which will fix some blunders committed in privatization”.

But he added that the halt of production for the last 20 days should not go unnoticed, because it “has its costs”.

Lawmaker Firas Al Ajarmeh, head of of the Lower House of the Parliament’s Committee on Energy, told Jordan News that “the committee supports the purchase of the Risha power plant and all other power plants as well”.

He added that “the purchase would generate more money for the budget”.

He pointed out that the committee and the minister will meet in parliament on Tuesday to further discuss the purchase.
