stability in electric car prices sparked a 40 percent increase in electric car
sales since the beginning of 2022.

Salameh Al-Jabali, president of the Jordan
Automobile Agents and Automotive Parts, attributed the increased sales on
”multiple factors”, which include the recent increase in oil derivatives and
since the automobile market is still recovering from the repercussions of the
COVID-19 pandemic.
“All automobile sales are increasing this year,” he
said. “We cannot link the increase in demand for electric cars only to the hike
in oil prices, since its effect is still not felt in the market.”
“The numbers show an increase in demand for diesel cars
as well,” Jabali added.
Mohammad Al-Bustanji, president of the
Jordanian Free Zones Association, said the main reason for the increase in demand is the
new supply line from China, which was initiated in June 2021.
He said vehicle imports from China significantly
impacted the demand because Chinese cars have many attractive features that
appeal to customers.
Another reason for the hike in demand is the cost,
Bustanji added.
He said that electric car prices are stable,
compared to hybrid cars, which saw an increase in customs’ private tax at the
beginning of 2022, reaching 55 percent compared with 45 percent last year.
He said the tax on electric cars remained unchanged,
at 10 percent.
Assaf Abdel-Ghani, owner of Assaf Cars Showroom,
told
Jordan News that demand for electric cars is increasing. “People are more invested in buying electric
cars than hybrid cars, but there is still some hesitation in regards to the
availability of parts in the market,” Abdel-Ghani explained.
When asked if the infrastructure is available and
ready for electric cars in Jordan, Jabali of the automobile agents confirmed
that charging stations are available in many areas.
“A lot of the gas stations have electric car charging points
installed, and you can even find it now on the desert highway road to Aqaba,”
Jabali said.
