The foundation announced the development in a press conference at the Four Seasons hotel on Tuesday. It said the office is part of foundation projects implemented in more than 80 countries worldwide.

Mentor International focuses on keeping young people engaged in education, preparing them for adulthood, promoting a healthy lifestyle to them, and reducing risky behavior, which they may be exposed to, such as drug use.

The conference hosted representatives of the foundation, as well as organizations and bodies that work in cooperation with the Mentor foundation.

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Wajih Oweis, who was one of the speakers, told  that the ministry will “cooperate with the foundation through holding extracurricular activities, which will be organized in classrooms”.

He noted that an agreement will be mapped out and signed, “but nothing is prepared or fixed yet”.

Addressing the meeting, Oweis said that the Mentor foundation “focuses on behaviors, and this is exactly what we need to focus on, through our curriculums or direct education of our students”.

He said that “real change in our society can be achieved only through changing the mindset, and making it more flexible, open to change, and tolerant.”

He called on Mentor to also target four- and five-year-old children in these programs to make a real change.

He pointed to the important role of teachers, saying they “are the basis of any educational process, not the curriculum, and we need to give a lot to our teachers”.

Thuraya Ismail, executive director for Mentor Arabia, said that foundation studies showed that its programs had a “considerable impact on the targeted students through enhancing their decision-making abilities, and healthy choices”.

Mentor was founded in 1994 by Queen Silvia of Sweden, in collaboration with members of the World Health Organization.
