Jordan
is expected to produce around 21,000 tonnes of olive oil, while around 39,000
tonnes of olives will be pickled, according to the Hneifat.
Hneifat
also noted that the olive harvest is set to be smaller than last year’s due to
climate factors, including temperature fluctuations during the flowering
period, in addition to a drought in the south of the country. He added that production
does remain “close” to average, Petra reported.
The
agriculture minister also pointed out at the government’ will subsidize
olive oil surplus exports by JD1 million to avoid domestic oversupply.
The
subsidies will only apply to quantities not exceeding 1,000 tonnes, according
to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The decision was issued to address the surplus problem, which was due to unorganized imports,
according to a statement by the ministry.
For his part, president of the Jordanian Olive
Products Exporters Association (JOPEA), Fayyad Al-Zyoud, previously said that
the olive oil surplus from the last season stood at 2,500 and 3,000 tonnes, which
can fill some 220 oil tins, adding that the government’s support will help
export those quantities to the markets.
