AMMAN — Around 155,00 people in Jordan are wanted for civil debts, 100,000 of whom
have debts of JD5,000 or less, Head of the Lower House Legal Committee Ghazi

Thunaibat
told Al-Mamlaka TV that around 43,000 persons have been convicted due to
bad checks, while approximately 13,000 Jordanians outside the Kingdom in
countries such as Egypt and Turkey have been sentenced to imprisonment because
they owe more than JD100,000.
“The number
of wanted persons includes all debtors against whom subpoenas were issued
before the coronavirus pandemic, in addition to those with travel bans issued
after the defense order was instated,” he explained.
“Prison occupancy rates are at 160 percent, meaning that a prison that can accommodate 1,000 currently has 1,600 inmates."
"The
economic situation is well known to all,” Thunaibat said, “and debtors are
affected the most.”
In spite of
the high number of wanted persons, prisons are overflowing. According to
Thunaibat, "prison occupancy rates are at 160 percent, meaning that a
prison that can accommodate 1,000 currently has 1,600 inmates".
