AMMAN — According to the Director of Traffic Management,
Colonel Dr. Firas Al-Dweiri, the latest
statistics on accidents show that 98.8 percent of traffic accidents are caused
by human error.

There have been 45,000 violations for running red lights,
and 220 deaths have been recorded due to traffic accidents since the beginning
of 2023.
However, the rate of traffic accidents has decreased
compared to the same period in 2022.
Causes of traffic accidents
According to Al-Dweiri, the causes of traffic accidents
resulting in human injuries to tire defects (27 percent) followed by rear
lights (19.8 percent) during the year 2022, stating that 98.8 percent of
traffic accidents are caused by human error.
He further explained that since the beginning of the current
year, 220 deaths have been recorded due to traffic accidents.
He also mentioned that the General Security Directorate,
through its deployed personnel on the roads, has increased traffic control by
44 percent during 2023 to enhance monitoring and enforcement of dangerous
violations, which are the main cause of traffic accidents.
A decrease of accidents from 2022
Furthermore, he stated that the rate of traffic accidents
has decreased since the beginning of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
He attributed the decrease to traffic safety education has
been introduced as a curriculum in both public and private universities as part
of the efforts of the GSD to increase traffic awareness and reduce traffic
accidents.
He mentioned that a number of technical inspectors have been
assigned, upon the instructions of the Director of Security, to inspect freight
vehicles at security checkpoints on external roads to ensure the roadworthiness
of these vehicles and to prevent any accidents resulting from mechanical
failures.
Regarding violations, he that there have been 45,000
violations for running red lights, 23,000 violations for driving in the
opposite direction, and 1,700 violations for reckless driving on public roads.
Legal measures have been taken against violators, and 161
driving licenses have been confiscated since the beginning of the year under
the implementation of the traffic points system.
He further added that since the beginning of the current
year, 1,397 pedestrian accidents have been recorded, resulting in 67
fatalities. He emphasized that the lack of compliance by pedestrians in safely
crossing the roads is one of the reasons for these accidents.
Indirect causes
Colonel Al-Dweiri affirmed that the increase in traffic
accidents during the current month does not reflect the actual number of
accidents and injuries, which have decreased during the same year. He
highlighted the indirect causes of traffic accidents, such as using mobile
phones and engaging in conversations with passengers while driving.
He emphasized that citizens are essential partners in the
traffic process, and human errors account for 99 percent of the causes of
accidents according to traffic statistics.
He also stated that 40 percent of traffic congestion sites have
been addressed through various measures, including closing roundabout exits,
separating lanes, and removing encroachments on sidewalks and roads.
Regarding awareness campaigns, he mentioned that more than
half a million awareness messages have been sent by the GSD to citizens' mobile
phones since the beginning of the year.
Additionally, over 3,000 awareness events have been
conducted through various media outlets.
Colonel Abdullah Al-Jubour, the Director of the Jordanian
Traffic Institute, stated that a study of hazardous locations has been prepared
based on the directives of the Director of General Security, which stemmed from
the Royal directives.
The aim is to reduce traffic accidents and improve traffic
safety in the Kingdom. A committee has been formed within the General Security
Directorate to achieve this goal in partnership with relevant entities in the
traffic field to identify dangerous locations on roads, propose solutions, and
provide engineering recommendations to prevent fatalities.
