AMMAN — Firas Al-Hawari, the minister of health, confirmed that, according to the latest statistics from 2014, a quarter
of all school children in Jordan are smokers.
Hawari stated in a national broadcast that
these numbers have increased currently after approximately 10 years, especially
with the emergence of new different types of smoking.
A societal responsibility
The minister added that the Public Health Law includes provisions and penalties sufficient to enable control of the
"new spread pandemic," Khaberni News reported.
He emphasized that the responsibility today
in combating the danger of smoking is primarily a societal one and begins with
parents.
Although, he clarified that Jordan does not
need to undergo lengthy legislative amendments, confirming that the existing
Public Health Law in our hands is sufficient to control the phenomenon.
