Deputy Chairman of the Board of
Commissioners Zuhair Abu Fares spoke about the IEC’s preparations for the
upcoming governorate and municipal council elections at a meeting he held on
Sunday with civil society institutions and activists in Irbid Governorate.
Abu Fares said that talk about
interference in the elections or their outcome have nothing to do with reality,
stressing that the Board of Commissioners will not allow a long and arduous
work process to end in fraud, and will not betray the public trust under any
pretext or justification.
He said the elections of members to municipalities,
local councils, and decentralized bodies, scheduled for March 22, need the help
of about 40,000 individuals to be carried out according to the highest levels
of integrity and transparency.
He pointed out that commission has
financial and administrative independence, and the government has nothing to do
with its work, except for providing logistical, security and human support
required by the procedural stages of the electoral process.
Attending the meeting were member of
the Board of Commissioners Abeer Al-Dababneh and Chairman of the Election
Committee for the Greater Irbid Municipality Fayeq Al-Khasawneh.
Dababneh reviewed the stages of the
electoral process and the subsequent stages leading to polling day and the
announcement of the results, noting that objections to voter lists will end
within the next two days, after which the lists will be final.
She added that the commission is in
the process of launching a training program for those wishing to run, in
addition to issuing instructions and frameworks for electoral campaigns,
financial ceilings for electoral campaigns, and candidates’ financial
disclosure.
She said that instructions grant three
days for objections to nomination applications by any person whose name is on
the voters' list, and three days after objections to consider and dismiss objections.
