In the update,
the WHO has debuted a new naming classification for variants of concern (VOC)
and variants of interest (VOI) of the coronavirus, noting that Jordan has
recorded instances of the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta variants, according to
the weekly briefing.
The Alpha variant
originated in the United Kingdom, the Beta variant in South Africa, the Gamma
variant in Brazil, and the Delta variant in India.
The new naming
system is intended to mitigate the stigma that comes with naming variants just
based on their country of origin, according to the WHO.
