The decision, which will save operators approximately 1.25 million Jordanian dinars, applies to large and medium-sized public transport buses, taxis, and service vehicles operating within the jurisdiction of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority.
However, the exemption does not cover the transport sector under the supervision of the Greater Amman Municipality and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, as these entities are responsible for regulating transport within their respective areas.
The decision also stipulates the refund of fees paid by operators since January 2, 2025, before the issuance of this decision.
This measure is part of the government’s support for the public transport sector, which has faced challenges due to the surrounding political conditions and fluctuations in oil prices, affecting the financial situation of operators and their commitments in the sector.
Additionally, the Council of Ministers approved the establishment of a "Passenger Transport Support Fund" based on the Passenger Transport Regulation Law. The fund aims to develop and enhance public transport services, provide regular transportation with set schedules, and improve efficiency in line with the law's objectives.
The fund will focus on developing passenger transport infrastructure, supporting and improving transport services and workers in the sector, investing in transport services, and addressing any future challenges the sector may encounter.
This initiative is expected to have a positive economic and social impact on both passengers and operators by encouraging more citizens to use public transport, as well as providing necessary fare support for targeted groups, including students at public universities, people with disabilities, and the elderly.
Moreover, the fund will contribute to increasing job opportunities in the passenger transport sector by fostering its development. It will also provide financing for the integration of smart transport systems into public transport and support fleet modernization through grants and loans for operators.
This step aligns with broader efforts to improve the public transport sector in the Kingdom and enhance its efficiency, benefiting both citizens and operators.
The fund will play a key role in ensuring the sustainability and financing of various transport projects while reducing commuting costs and encouraging greater workforce participation, particularly among women.
