The vaccines are part of a plan announced on June 3, 2021 by
the White House to donate vaccines to different countries around the world, and
were sent in a direct arrangement with Jordan, rather than through the
international Covax program.
The vaccines began to be unloaded from the plane at around
12:40am. Afterwards, a press conference was held with the Jordanian Minister of
Health
Firas Al-Hawari and the US Embassy in Amman’s Charge d’Affairs Michael
Hankey. The conference was also attended by partners from the Jordanian
Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Center
for Security and Crisis Management.
A statement from the US embassy said that Jordan was
prioritized in its vaccine distribution campaign to show the importance of the
two countries’ strategic relations.
Hankey stated that “The United States has financially
supported Jordan in extending COVID health resources and vaccines to refugees
who depend on Jordan’s unfailing generosity.”
The official added that “last week, the Ministry of Health
and USAID launched a nationwide vaccine confidence campaign to promote accurate
vaccine information and encourage vaccine registration.”
This partnership between the two countries is working to
save lives and help Jordan move towards achieving economic recovery, the
statement added.
Up until now Jordan has secured 11.5 million doses of
different coronavirus vaccines, according to local media outlets.
In a tweet, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Al-Safadi
wrote that, “We thank the #US for its donation of half a million doses of
Pfizer vaccine. This initiative reflects our deep friendship & partnership.
These vaccines will give a major boost to Kingdom’s efforts to fight the spread
of covid, open up various sectors & ensure a safe summer.”
The US originally announced the donation on Friday, Jordan
News reported.
According to the World Health Organization, there have so
far been 9,855 deaths in Jordan from the coronavirus, with the peak in
fatalities occurring this March, according to AFP.
