The global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled
since 1980, rising from 4.7 percent to 8.5 percent in adults, and this brings
into focus the risk factors associated with diabetes, such as being overweight
and obese.
Over the past decade, the prevalence of diabetes has
increased significantly in low- and middle-income countries, compared to
high-income countries, the UN reported.
According to the website of the
National Center for Diabetes Endocrinology and Genetics, the percentage of people with latent
autoimmune diabetes, and diabetes, in Jordan reached 45 percent, and the
percentage of overweight and obese people reached 78 percent.
On December 20, 2007, the UN General Assembly
adopted Resolution 61/225 declaring November 14 of each year World Diabetes
Day, recognizing the urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and
improve
human health and to enable access to health care treatment and
education.
The resolution also encourages member states to
develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes,
in line with their health care systems.
Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney
failure, heart attacks and strokes. Following a healthy diet, good physical
activity and refraining from smoking can prevent or delay the onset of type 2
diabetes.
Moreover, it is possible to treat diabetes, avoid its
consequences or delay its onset through medicine, regular examination and
treating any complications.
