Last week, Jordan News reported that a
national survey was underway to determine just how many cases of the highly
transmissible Delta variant were present in Jordan. The variant, which
originated in India, features two significant mutations, known as the L452R and
E484Q, which make the virus more transmissible and more difficult for the
immune system to overcome.
Azmi Mahafzah, a microbiologist and former
chair of the national epidemiological committee’s lab committee, told Jordan
News last week that he believed that the Delta variant was the “dominant
strain” in Jordan.
The highly contagious variant has spread
quickly, especially in areas with
low rates of vaccination. Preliminary
research shows that available COVID-19 vaccines still provide protection
against the variant.
