The minister added in a statement: "In an implementation of the Royal vision regarding the importance of comprehensive work and cooperation among the country's various sectors, a national strategy was developed to help solve the impact of climate change on the health sector."
Hawari indicated that the national plan to adapt to climate change is underway, and emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure to cope with climate change's potential adverse impacts.
As part of Jordan's keenness to continue its development of the health sector and its commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Paris Agreement, and in response to the Royal directives to adopt a sustainable and adaptable health system, the Ministry of Health announced the following:
Firstly, Jordan will continue to develop its health system to be resilient to the impacts of climate change. This includes the obligation to update the Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment of the health impacts of climate change in Jordan, which was prepared in 2012.
This evaluation will be further updated coherently to update health policies and programs.
Secondly, Jordan will develop a sustainable health system that reduces carbon emissions to meet the Paris Agreement target by undertaking a basic assessment of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the healthcare system, including supply chains.
This would include the preparation and dissemination of an action plan identifying how to develop an environmentally sustainable low-carbon health system in Jordan, ensuring the health sector's role in contributing to reducing emissions and air pollution resulting from its activities.
This comes in line with Jordan's initiative to be active in working to prepare for the impact of climate change and maintain the health of the Jordanian people while marking a step forward in developing the national health system in countering any future crises.
