The crowd in Sunday’s protest included professional
association members, political activists, and Jordanians from all walks of
life.
Salem Al-Falahat, secretary-general of the
Partnership and Salvation Party, said that the government’s decision to hike
the prices is primarily aimed at shifting people’s attention away from the
deteriorating conditions, instead focusing at ways to secure their basic needs.
Falahat demanded the government to immediately
retract from its decision to increase prices and to cancel a flat tax it levies
on oil derivatives.
He pointed out that officials who are responsible
for the decision ignored people’s pocket-book issues.
Falahat criticized the absence of political
parties from decisions that affect people’s economic conditions.
