AMMAN — The Cabinet on Wednesday appointed
Adel Sharkas, a longtime
Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) official, as the new
governor of the bank succeeding Zyad Fareez.

Bisher Al-Khasawneh thanked the
outgoing CBJ governor for his service and role in "cementing the Kingdom's
monetary stability and reforms at critical economic circumstances".
Sharkas was appointed as the deputy governor of the CBJ
in April 2012. He held several positions at the CBJ, where he started his
career as an economist at the research department in February 1991. After that,
he moved to the US, where he received his PhD in 2002. In the same year, he was
appointed as an Assistant Professor of Financial Economics at
Alfred University, New York. In 2006, he was promoted to Associate Professor of
Financial Economics at the same University. He rejoined the CBJ in June 2006 as
head of the monetary affairs division at the research department.
In 2009, he was promoted to deputy executive director and
then to executive director for the research department in late 2011.
Sharkas holds a PhD degree in financial economics from
the
University of New Orleans, a master’s degree in Applied Statistics and
Financial Economics from
Yarmouk University, and a bachelor’s degree in Applied
Statistics from the same university.
