AMMAN — President of the Jordan Medical Association
Ziyad Al-Zoubi said that amendments to the Medical Council Act, approved by the
Parliament, will allow thousands of doctors studying abroad to join the labor
market without scrutiny of their certificates, Jo24 reported.

He said allowing
more doctors into the already saturated medical sector would create new crises.
He said doctors will request audience with His Majesty King Abdullah to help
them sort out the problem of doctors in the country, and the prevalent laws
governing the medical sector.
High
unemployment is reported among medical school graduates, which prompted
academics, unionists and labor experts to call on school graduates to look for
other professions to avoid joining the ranks of unemployed doctors.
In earlier
comments, Zoubi said there were 2,500 unemployed doctors in Jordan, and warned
that enrolling more students in medical specialties at universities will only
exacerbate the problem of unemployment in the sector.
According to
Zoubi, 38,000 doctors practice the profession in various specialties in the
country. He said that some 38,000 students are studying medicine in Jordan and
abroad, a large number that severely affects the availability of job
opportunities in this vital sector.
Zoubi said the
reasons for the doctors’ unemployment is the disruption of employment in the
public sector, and the interruption of medical tourism, which used to employ
doctors in private hospitals and clinics, Zoubi added.
He called for an
increase in the number of doctors admitted to the specialization programs, with
a view to providing the ministry’s lost and subsidiary competencies and those
that had increased demand from other countries.
