The war in Ukraine, according to some Russian and Western officials, has entered its most dangerous phase, after Russian forces made some of the largest territorial gains and after the U.S. allowed Kyiv to retaliate using American-made missiles.
The independent Russian news outlet "Agentstvo" reported that "Russia has set new weekly and monthly records in terms of the area of land it has occupied in Ukraine."
It was explained that Russian forces controlled approximately 235 square kilometers in Ukraine during the past week, marking a record weekly gain for 2024.
The report added that Russian forces took control of 600 square kilometers in November, citing data from the "DeepState" group, which has close ties to the Ukrainian military and studies combat imagery and provides maps of the frontlines, according to Reuters.
According to open-source maps, Russia began advancing more rapidly in eastern Ukraine in July, once Ukrainian forces were able to capture a part of the Kursk region in western Russia. Since then, Russian progress has accelerated.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War, based in Washington, reported that "Russian forces are advancing at a much faster rate recently than they did throughout all of 2023."
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces updated on Monday that 45 battles of varying intensity took place along the front line near Kurakhove in the evening.
A report from the Institute for the Study of War and military bloggers loyal to Russia indicated that Russian forces are now present in Kurakhove. The "DeepState" group also reported via Telegram on Monday that Russian forces are near Kurakhove.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he believes the main objectives of Russian President Vladimir Putin are to occupy the entire Donbas region, which includes the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and to expel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk area, which they have controlled parts of since August.
