AMMAN
— On Friday, the
Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) announced a
four-month suspension of all fishing activities, both professional and
recreational. This suspension will begin on January 1, 2024, until the evening
of April 30, 2024. The primary objective is to protect and prevent the fishing
of resident fish species during their crucial breeding period, ASEZA stated.
This period is considered vital both scientifically and environmentally, as it
is a significant phase in their
life cycle for egg laying and reproduction,
Khaberni reported.

The
decision was reached during a meeting at the Aqaba Authority, attended by the heads
of
fishing associations in Aqaba, Dr. Ayman Suleiman, the Commissioner of
Environment, and Ramzi Al-Kabriti, the Commissioner of Youth and
Entrepreneurship, Khabeerni reported. This decision is part of the Authority's
collaborative efforts with professional and recreational fishing associations
to preserve the fish wealth in the Gulf of Aqaba. The aim is to enhance
reproduction and contribute to the sustainability of the fish stock while
preserving its unique marine ecosystems. This decision aligns with the
regulations governing fishing and aquatic organisms in the Gulf of Aqaba,
issued in 2020.
During
the meeting, all parties agreed to prohibit the fishing of all resident fish
species, whether in shallow or deep waters, and all authorized fishing
locations. Licensed professional and recreational fishermen are only allowed to
catch migratory fish during this period. This includes tuna species (amberjack,
fathead, and skipjack) and horse mackerel. The use of metal traps (traps) and
seine nets (shwarat) on licensed professional and recreational fishing boats is
also prohibited. Only the use of nets designated for bait collection and
fishing lines is permitted.
Financial
compensation will be provided by the Authority to licensed professional and
traditional fishermen for refraining from fishing and sailing entirely during
the specified period.
The
Authority emphasized the enforcement of legal penalties for any violations of
these regulations. This includes the seizure of violating boats for one month
from the date of the violation and a ban on sailing. The cooperation of
citizens and professional and recreational fishermen in implementing these
regulations is crucial for the positive impact on the fishing sector in Aqaba.
This will ensure suitable quantities of fish for the coming months.
