AMMAN — Workers at the
Aqaba Company for
Ports Operation and Management continued the strike they began the day of the
gas leak last Monday, Al-Ghad News reported.

The workers are
demanding improved labor rights, including public safety measures to be
undertaken in the workplace.
Handling traffic has
stopped on all berths of the southern port, in addition to shipping traffic and
all port operations since the chlorine gas leak which killed 13 people and
injured 250 others.
Head of the Port
Workers Syndicate, Ahmad Al-Amayreh, said that the strike includes all the
workers in the port facilities, such as the berths, warehouses, yards, handling
and unloading operations.
He asserted that the
strike will continue until the demands are met, primarily is public safety.
Amayreh pointed out
that last Monday’s incident was “expected for some time” due to the lack of
measures which meet public safety requirements. He stressed that the workers
are waiting to meet officials in Aqaba to achieve their demands, in order to
end their strike.
