Concluding their meetings in Amman, the ministers
said in interviews with Petra that the Arab region is the most susceptible to
food security crises in the wake of recent droughts and the fallout from
climate change.
The ministers said Jordan is a safe haven, in
political and security terms, in the midst of a volatile region, as Royal
efforts took the lead in sensing the food security crisis, and the Kingdom was
a key mediator to ward off regional conflicts and ensure sustainable food
supplies to Arab people.
Lebanese Minister of Agriculture
Abbas Hajj Hassan
explained that available supplies in the market are not enough to achieve food
security, but buying commodities at affordable prices is necessary in this
respect.
He said food security faltered and prices doubled as
a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Syrian Agriculture Minister Mohhammad Qatana warned
that the food security crisis will worsen if Arab countries do not cooperate on
agricultural integration, noting that political crises that afflicted the
region have directly impacted the flow of goods.
He pointed to
climate change as a key challenge to achieving food security in the Arab world,
referring to severe droughts that some countries have experienced recently.
Iraqi Minister of Agriculture Mohammad Karim Khafaji
stressed the importance of meetings, led by Jordan, to chart a road map to
overcome the threat to food and water security in the region and its
repercussions on societal security.
Minister of Agriculture
Khaled Hneifat said Jordan
has early on rang the alarm bell on the food security challenge, adopting and
implementing a comprehensive food security strategy in cooperation with UN organizations.
