The government
approved the decision of the Holy See to nominate Dal Toso to be its ambassador
extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Hashemite royal court.
An apostolic
nuncio is an ecclesiastical diplomat, who serves as an envoy or diplomatic
representative of the Holy See to a country.
The Director
General of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media, Father Rif'at Bader, said
that this is the first time a resident papal ambassador has been appointed
locally, considering the apostolic nuncio to Jordan also served Iraq, and spent
his entire residence in Iraq due to political crises and wars.
The
ambassador’s stay in Jordan would be considered a positive development in the
diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, said
Father Bader, noting that relations have been officially concluded since 1994.
The new
apostolic nuncio is the sixth ambassador to serve in Jordan.
Archbishop Dal
Toso, 58, was born in the Italian city of Vicenza, joined the seminary in the
Italian city of Brixen, and then completed his studies in philosophy and
theology at the Higher Institute of Philosophy and Theology in Brixen.
He then obtained
the title of "teacher of theology" from the Faculty of Theology at
the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
He was ordained
a priest on June 24, 1989 for the Diocese of Bolzano-Brixen, and after three
years of service in the diocese, he obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy from the
Pontifical Gregorian University. In June 2001 he obtained a degree in Canon Law
from the Pontifical Lateran University.
Since May 1996,
he has worked on the "One Heart" council concerned with providing aid
to the less fortunate, especially refugees, and was appointed as an agent on
June 21, 2004. He was appointed secretary general of the Pontifical Council
“One Heart” on June 16, 2010.
After the council
was dissolved on January 1, 2017, he was appointed deputy secretary in the
newly established Department for the Promotion of Integral Human Development.
On November 9,
2017, he became co-secretary General of the Congregation for the Evangelization
of Peoples (currently the Department of Evangelization).
