AMMAN — A Border Guard captain was killed
and three soldiers were injured early Sunday while engaging a group of
smugglers on the Kingdom’s northeastern border, according to the Jordan News
Agency, Petra.

A statement by the
Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army
said that at dawn on Sunday, smugglers opened fire on a Border Guard patrol on
the northeastern border, and that the soldiers returned fire and pushed the
smugglers back into Syrian territory.
The incident left Captain Mohammad Khudayrat dead
and three other soldiers injured; they were evacuated to a nearby military
hospital. A search of the area where the incident took place found narcotics
left behind by the smugglers, the statement said.
The army reaffirmed that it will not tolerate any smuggling
or infiltration attempts targeting national security. It presented condolences
to the family of the fallen captain and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
