AMMAN — Jordan’s National Society for Consumer Protection (NSCP) on Sunday
called on the Ministry of Agriculture to allow the import of adequate
quantities of bananas to meet market demand, especially after an
"unjustified increase" on the price of the fruit, Saraya News
reported.

In a
statement, the society said that the selling price of one kilogram of local
bananas has reached JD1.25, which is the same price of large imported bananas,
including the cost of shipping and additional fees.
The
society has received “hundreds of complaints” from citizens and merchants
regarding the high price of local bananas, said the head of the NSCP, Mohammed
Obeidat.
“It is unacceptable that a group of farmers or traders control the quantities supplied to local markets from abroad on the pretext of protecting the local product”
He attributed
the high price to low local production during the current season and called for
sufficient imports to meet market demand, especially as the holy month of
Ramadan approaches.
Defending rights of farmers,
consumers“It
is unacceptable that a group of farmers or traders control the quantities
supplied to local markets from abroad on the pretext of protecting the local
product, because the quantities produced locally and the quantities imported
combined do not cover the local demand,” Obeidat said.
The
NSCP "defends the rights of farms, which suffer from difficult conditions,
but at the same time defends the rights of all parties in the market,
especially consumers who suffer from difficult economic conditions", he
said.
