Authorities probing deaths after power outage at Gardens Hospital

AMMAN — Authorities are investigating two deaths and 30 individuals linked to a
power outage at Gardens Hospital in Amman late Saturday.

Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson Sakher Dudin said in a statement that the Public Attorney office was tasked by the government to initiate an investigation into the incident and come up with an "impartial and accurate report."

He noted that Minister of Health Feras Al-Hawari and Minister of Interior Mazen Al-Farraya arrived at the hospital to stand at the situation and take the necessary action.

Dudin stressed that the operation at the hospital was "going on as usual."
MP Ahmad Al-Sarahneh, chair of the Health Committee at the Lower House, who was in the scene told Jordan News that the power failure was caused by a short circuit and "the situation was under control."

He said two people died — a woman in her 60s and a man in his 70s with chronic diseases — one half an hour before the power outage and another following it.
Minister of health Feras Al-Hawari said in a press statement that the first death occurred on 9:33pm on Saturday, approximately 20 minutes before the blackout. It is not clear whether the first death was linked to the blackout. The second death occurred at 11:23pm, approximately an hour and a half after the blackout.
The second fatality was the woman, whose husband alleged that electricity was off for 23 minutes, leaving his ailing wife seven minutes without oxygen and leading to her demise, according to Al-Ghad.
However, the director of Gardens Hospital, Fayez Abu Humaidan, disputed this characterization.
"The cause of the two deaths was not related to the power outage, but their health condition was critical," Humaidan told Jordan News. He confirmed that the outage occurred on the first and second floors, and that the hospital has three generators.
Humaidan added that the hospital has devices that can continue work for twenty minutes after the electrical source is cut off.
Director of Forensic Medicine at Al-Basheer Hospital Hassan Al-Hawari told Jordan News that "the forensic team is still working on the process of autopsy, while the general prosecutor is supervising the process."
Hawari added that the two bodies will undergo full autopsies.
The results of the autopsy will be announced on Wednesday, according to an anonymous source from the Forensic Medical Committee.
