AMMAN — The
number of visitors and
pilgrims to the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ at the Jordan
River has increased by 89 percent during the first seven months of this year
compared to the same period last year.

According to
Director General of the
Baptism Site Rustom Mkhjian the total number of
visitors and pilgrims to the site from the beginning of this year until the end
of July reached 136,272, compared to 72,069 visitors
during the same period last year, Hala News reported.
He stated that the number of visitors to the
site in July last year reached 12,196 visitors, marking an increase of 27
percent compared to the same month the previous year. He attributed the slight
decrease in visitors last month to the rise in temperatures, which is a regular
annual occurrence.
Tourism movement has reached unprecedented
numbers
He further emphasized that the recorded
statistics since the beginning of this year reveal that the
tourist movement has reached unprecedented numbers, breaking previous records. He expressed
great optimism for a continued surge in visitor numbers, making this year the
best among previous years.
Visitor nationalities
In terms of visitor nationalities, the
distribution was as follows: 47.5 percent from
European Union countries, 13.6
percent from Italy, 13.3 percent from the US, 8.6 percent from France, and 5.6
percent from Spain. An additional 6.2 percent came from Latin America,
including 1.5 percent from Brazil. However, there was a slight decrease in
visitors from Russia, reaching 0.55 percent.
As for domestic tourism, the percentage of
visitors reached 12.1 percent, while for Arab countries, the percentage was 9.8
percent, with Lebanon having the highest percentage at 5.9 percent of the total
visitors.
