In the letter,
Barghouti stressed the importance of the Kingdom’s
role in safeguarding Islamic and
Christian sanctities, including the city of
Jerusalem and the role Jordan plays as brotherly nation in restoring national
unity, ending division, and promoting Arab solidarity, Ammon News reported.
Fadwa Barghouti is promoting an international campaign titled
"Freedom for Marwan Barghouti, Mandela Palestine" in Europe, South
Africa, Latin America, and Ireland. This campaign had been previously discussed
with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who
also received a letter from Barghouti two weeks ago.
The Hebrew newspaper, Haaretz, reported that
Barghouti is collaborating with Arab and international parties to garner support for her
husband, who is seen as a potential successor to Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas.
In recent weeks, Barghouti has held extensive meetings with senior
officials in Arab countries and diplomats from the United States, Russia, and
Europe, urging them to work towards securing her husband's release from the
occupation prisons.
Solidify international backing
Sources close to Barghouti revealed that these meetings also aimed
to solidify international backing for her husband as the rightful candidate to
lead the Palestinian Authority once current
President Mahmoud Abbas (88 years
old) completes his term.
Barghouti’s name frequently comes up in discussions regarding the
next president of the Palestinian Authority, and he has announced on several
occasions his intention to run in any
future elections for the post. Over the
years, Barghouti has consistently emerged as the clear favorite in polls, with
majorities of over 60 percent favoring him over any other named opponent. He is
especially popular among the younger and middle generations of Palestinians.
Barghouti is presently serving five life sentences plus 40 years in
prison due to his alleged involvement in murders and attacks against Israelis
during the Second Intifada. He was arrested during the 2002 Defensive Shield
operation and was subsequently tried and convicted for the murder of four
individuals.
