AMMAN — US President Joe Biden nominated Yael
Lempert to serve as the US ambassador to Jordan on Tuesday, according to an
Israeli media outlet.
The key post of US ambassador to Jordans holds great
significance, especially as Israel swore in its most right-wing,
ultra-nationalist, and extreme government in its history, causing regional
tensions to rise.
Lempert currently serves as the State Department’s
second-highest-ranking diplomat dedicated to the Middle East.
She has visited the region several times during her time
with the Biden administration in bids to de-escalate tensions — including
meetings last April between Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian officials as
tensions flared surrounding Al-Haram Al-Sharif in Jerusalem.
