AMMAN — Secretary-General of the
Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) Manar Mahasneh said that constructing new dams is likely
less expensive than cleaning some dams of sand and silt, Al-Mamlaka TV
reported.

Mahasneh said that cleaning 1 million cubic meters
of sediment costs approximately JD8 million to JD10 million.
A study has been conducted to determine the
feasibility of constructing dams in the north and south of the Kingdom, she
said on Tuesday.
She noted that it may be feasible to construct a dam
with a small storage capacity in the south, even though dams have already been
built in the Jordan Valley wherever feasible.
She indicated that, according to the study, the
northern valleys already contain their full capacity of dams.
“Constructing a dam depends on the location and the
geology of the area,” Mahasneh said. “It’s not about the cost, but rather, the
feasibility.”
Nevertheless, cleaning dams takes time, she
explained. For cleaning to take place, the dam must be completely dry so that
the sediments can be transferred to another site.
Dams are cleaned of silt and sediment to increase
their storage capacity, she explained.
Preventive cleaning was carried out on the
Tannur Dam, 150km south of Amman on Wadi Hasa, as a precautionary measure, so that the
dam’s intake will not be affected, the secretary-general noted.
“We also started cleaning the Shuaib Dam under an agreement
signed with the Royal Engineering Corps, and the rate of completion is good.
Also, we will start cleaning the dams in the south under an agreement to be
signed with the private sector,” she added.
