AMMAN — The Civil Defense Department (CDD) has had to extinguish 8,506
forest and bushfires fires between
January and mid-June of this year, according to CDD Director Anwar Al-Tarawneh.

In remarks to Al Ghad and
Jordan News, Tarawneh said bushfires are a common occurrence during
dry summer seasons, making up a majority of the incidents dealt with by CDD personnel, noting that many “take safety precautions lightly,” adding to the
mounting causes of these fire, including high temperatures.
Tarawneh also pointed out certain
behaviors that contribute to the phenomenon, such as throwing cigarette butts
on the ground, forgetting to turn off stoves or to put out cooking fires, and
leaving children without adult supervision or allowing them to start fires.
