Over 3.5 million new cases and 78,000 new deaths were reported around the world in the week before June 1, marking a 15-percent and 7-percent decrease respectively from the previous week’s counts.

According to the update, Jordan recorded 5,433 new cases of COVID-19 in the week prior to June 1, bringing the total of cumulative cases to 735,139. For every 100,000 of Jordan’s population, 7,205 people have been infected by COVID-19 at one time. There were also 86 new deaths in the week prior to June 1, adding up to 9,443 cumulative deaths. Around 93 people out of every 100,000 have died as a result of the virus in the Kingdom, according to the update.

Iran, Iraq, and Bahrain continue to lead the Eastern Mediterranean region in terms of number of new COVID-19 cases. There were a total of 212,000 new cases in the region as a whole and over 3,500 new deaths (an 18-percent decrease in death compared to the past week).

The decrease in cases worldwide comes as the global vaccination campaign has persisted; WHO reported that as of May 26, 2021, over 1.5 billion vaccine doses had been administered, with over 736 million individuals receiving at least one dose. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom has called on world leaders to share doses and contribute to COVAX in a push to vaccinate 10 percent of the population of every country by September.

Jordan has begun to reopen the economy in recent weeks, as the national positivity rate has continued to hover below 5 percent. On Saturday, the government announced that it would conduct periodic PCR tests for all citizens and public and private sector employees in order to monitor the situation and prevent a third wave of the virus, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Additionally, travelers arriving to the Kingdom will need to present either a negative PCR test or a vaccination certificate at the airport.
