Amman – Chinese authorities have announced that the death toll from the earthquake that struck Tibet early today has risen to 53, with 62 injuries reported so far. The figures remain preliminary.

According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, shook the northern slopes of the Himalayas in Tibet, causing casualties and damaging buildings in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan, and India.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.1 on the Richter scale.
The China Earthquake Networks Center stated that the quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 10 km in Tingri, a rural county known as the northern gateway to the Everest region.
Xinhua added that local government officials are in contact with nearby towns to assess the earthquake’s impact and verify the extent of the damage.
Residents of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, located about 400 km away, also felt the tremor, prompting many to flee their homes.
The quake was also felt in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, as well as in Bihar state in northern India near the Nepalese border.
Indian officials reported no damages or casualties so far.
Southwestern China, Nepal, and northern India are frequently hit by earthquakes due to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
