A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the "Xizang" area in southwestern China on Tuesday, causing thousands of rural homes to collapse on the northern slopes of the Himalayas.
An initial survey revealed the collapse of 3,609 homes, according to the city government of "Shigatse." Rescue efforts to locate trapped victims are ongoing, with emergency workers racing against time to set up tents for displaced residents in an area where temperatures are expected to drop to minus 17 degrees Celsius.
The central Chinese authorities have dispatched approximately 22,000 disaster relief supplies to the affected region, including specialized aid for high-altitude and extremely cold areas.
The emergency response level for the earthquake has been raised to Level One, the highest emergency response level, as announced by the region’s Emergency Management Command Center.
More than 12,000 rescue personnel, including firefighters, soldiers, police officers, and professional rescue teams, have been deployed to the earthquake site.
China's Ministry of Finance and Emergency Management has allocated 100 million yuan (approximately $13.9 million) to support disaster relief efforts in "Xizang." Meanwhile, the National Development and Reform Commission has allocated an additional 100 million yuan to aid post-disaster recovery efforts.
