He also said that the Ministry of Health has been examining about
15 percent of samples of diarrhea for more than 20 years to check for four
microbes, including cholera.
Currently, the ministry has increased the rate of diarrhea testing
samples to check for cholera, in some areas 50 to 100 percent, according to
Bilbeisi, who added that the result of stool samples take between 48 and 72
hours.
In order to avoid isolating suspected cases for that period, he
said there is another test that needs 10–15 minutes to show whether one has
cholera or not.
He pointed out that 2,500 rapid cholera tests will arrive in
Jordan early next week, and will be distributed to governorates, especially in
the north, which is the closest to the Syrian border.
Cholera
vaccinations
Bilbeisi said that no
country in the world uses cholera vaccines at the present time, noting that
although they are available, their effectiveness is low, and that they are used
where the disease prevails in small areas. He said that if an infection is
recorded in a camp, the vaccine may be used.
