— At a time when the government is seeking radical measures to address the
problem of stray dogs in Jordan, citizen Zaid Al-Kaabneh has made an
unprecedented donation to provide a solution.

Kaabneh
has donated 28 dunums of land in Al-Jizah south of Amman to shelter stray dogs.
Comprehensive sanctuaryThe
donated land area allows for the establishment of a comprehensive sanctuary for
stray dogs, especially as it is far from residential areas, Kaabneh said, as
reported by Roya.
The
area donated, he said, "if utilized properly, could accommodate between
20,000 to 30,000 dogs."
Kaabneh's
initiative comes amid the spread of stray dogs in various areas in Jordan and
amid growing complaints from individuals about the recurrence of attacks, some
of which have been serious.
Stray
dogs bit around 5,000 in 2022, according to statistics from the Ministry of
Health.
Limited government roleEarlier,
the Ministry of Agriculture stated in a statement that its role in dealing with
stray dogs is limited to the health and veterinary aspects, while monitoring
and sheltering dogs falls under the responsibilities of the Ministry of Local
Administration and Greater Amman Municipality.
The
ministry confirmed that the laws it issued prohibit hunting animals in general,
including stray dogs, indicating that the monitoring of stray dogs is the
responsibility of the municipality, in accordance with one of the articles of
the Local Administration and Greater Amman Municipality Law.
