According to one local media source, 35
European countries were represented by the delegation.
The day before, on Tuesday, Jordanian envoy
Ghassan Majali had been temporarily prevented from entering Al-Aqsa complex by
Israeli forces, who had claimed that he needed prior authorization to do so. Jordan’s
Foreign Ministry had responded swiftly by summoning Israel’s ambassador to the
Kingdom and handing him a letter of protest to be conveyed to his government.
Shortly after, Majali gained entry to the
holy site.
Through their visit on Wednesday, the
European representatives aimed to emphasize the importance of respecting the
Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem’s Christian and Muslim holy sites, and
the need to avoid any actions that would escalate the situation in Jerusalem
and the rest of the Palestinian Territories.
Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN secretary-general,
said that the UN stands against any efforts to change the status quo in the
holy sites in Jerusalem.
