AMMAN — Work on the Desert Highway project is
expected to be completed during the third quarter of this year, Al-Mamlaka TV
reported.

On Monday, Minister of Public Works and Housing and Minister
of Transport Maher Abu Samen inspected project works to rehabilitate the
remaining parts of the Desert Highway between Ras Al-Naqab and Al-Humayma.
During the inspection tour, the minister was given a
detailed briefing on the progress of the project works which are divided into
two separate sections — the first between Mraigha and Debbet Hanout, which has
a completion rate of 50 percent, and the second from Debbet Hanout to
Al-Humayma, which is 65 percent complete.
Project detailsThe project works include removing old layers of asphalt and
repaving the highway, in addition to installing water conduits and conducting
slope protection and traffic safety works.
In addition, the project involves expanding the highway to
three lanes and a shoulder for those coming from Aqaba towards Amman, and two
lanes and a shoulder for traffic moving from Amman towards Aqaba.
Major arteryAbu Samen stressed the importance of the project in terms of
development and tourism, as the highway is a major artery linking the port of
Aqaba to the various governorates of the Kingdom.
He also highlighted the need to complete the project works
within the set timeframe, securing elements that protect public safety in
accordance with the highest international engineering standards.
