AMMAN — Director of the
Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) Col. Hassan Al-Qudah said that according to international
classifications, Jordan is still a transit area for narcotics, and not a
destination, a local TV outlet reported on Friday.

Qudah said that the reason for the recent increase
in cases of drug use and traffic — and subsequent seizures — are the growing
traffickers’ attempts to smuggle their goods through Jordan to neighboring
countries.
He added that the AND works to bring supply and
demand down, by conducting raids and arresting dealers and traffickers, while
spreading awareness and offering treatment.
The department, he said, works based on three axes:
operational, educational, and therapeutic.
Regarding the operational axis, Qudah said that the
number of drug cases in the country had reached 15,308 since the beginning of
the year, of which 4,334 cases are of trafficking and 10,974 cases are of drug
abuse, noting a 5 percent, and 9 percent decrease, respectively, compared to
last year.
Regarding the therapeutic aspect, Qudah said that the
department receives cases that voluntarily seek treatment, and deals with them
confidentially and free of charge.
