AMMAN — In light of the global crisis, Head of the
Farmers Union Mahmoud Al-Ouran
called on the Social Security Investment fund to cultivate strategic crops such
as wheat and barley, according to Jo24.

Ouran told Jo24
that a plan and a decision about cultivating strategic crops were expected to
be drawn up to achieve food security and self-sufficiency in the Kingdom. He
said the move was prompted by India’s cessation of its wheat exports, and the
ongoing
Russian-Ukraine war, which led many countries to stop exporting their
produce.
He added that
the weather in Jordan is currently considered hazardous for the agriculture
sector, indicating that the current season has been very rough and directly
affected the crops and will later affect the produce that goes to the central
market.
Ouran also
pointed out that the sector will suffer water shortage due to the decline in
rainfall in parts of the Kingdom, contending that the dust storms which
recently hit the country have a direct negative impact on livestock by
transmitting diseases and creating an environment for spiders on plants.
