AMMAN — As the war raged in
Gaza in May and
Israeli police attacked protesters in the West Bank, another battle was waged
online. This included a fifteen-fold increase in violent anti-Arab and
anti-Palestinian speech online, according to the Index of Racism report from the
Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media (7amleh).

The report found that there was fifteen times
more online hate speech against Arabs and Palestinians from May 6 to 21, 2021,
compared to the same time period in 2020.
Over half (58 percent) of this violent content
was shared on Twitter, more than any other single platform or website.
The report identified 1,090,000 conversations
online related to Palestinians or Arabs generally during that time period. Of
these, close to a third (29 percent) of conversations incited violence; 31
percent included insults against Arabs or Palestinians; and 40 percent included
racist speech against Palestinians and Arabs.
Censorship, online hate speech, and social
media activism have all become key elements of the international discourse
surrounding the ongoing Israeli occupation in Palestine.
The violent episode in May, which started with
peaceful protests against the forced expulsion of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah
from their homes, has been well-documented and discussed over social media.
Previously,
Jordan News reported on the censorship facing
pro-Palestine activists who spoke openly about Sheikh Jarrah on their social
media pages.
