AMMAN—The current financial
pledges provided to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian
Refugees (UNRWA) cover the expenses of 2022 first quarter, according to the
official spokesperson for the UN agency, Tamara Al-Rifai.

Rifai, who is also the director of strategic
communications at UNRWA, told Al-Mamlaka TV that the agency is still working on
preparing the 2022 budget “based on attempting to maintain the budget of last
year.” The program’s budget for 2020 and
2021 amounted to $806 million.
Last year, the agency faced multiple financial
crises that led to tension with its workers, who threatened to stage a general
strike. UNRWA also announced that it
went through an “existential threat due to an unprecedented financial crisis”
and that it was targeted by “unnamed parties.”
The International
Ministerial Conference to Support UNRWA, organized by Jordan and Sweden in
Brussels last November, was able to obtain multi-year pledges (from two to five
years) worth $614 million. UNRWA
believed that the combined pledges would be equivalent to 40 percent of The
Agency’s basic budget needs for 2022.
UNRWA assists Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon,
Syria, the occupied West Bank, and the Gaza Strip and its services include
education, health care, relief, social services, infrastructure, camp
improvement, protection, and microfinance.
