“After a year of dedication and hard
work, I am delighted to announce that Amman has won the Bloomberg
Philanthropies Global Challenge Award,” Shawarbeh wrote on Twitter.
He added that the win “highlights
the appreciation of our city’s continued efforts to think more comprehensively
and boldly”.
Bloomberg announced on Tuesday that
the
city of Amman was one of 15 cities that have won the Global Mayors Challenge,
for which 631 cities worldwide submitted their applications in 2021.
The award is granted to creative
ideas and innovative solutions that help cities recover from the effects of the
corona pandemic.
"Amman is Listening"
project is an online participatory platform with interactive accessibility maps
that respond to the needs of the population during crises and promote urban
resilience, through which ideas were presented in four areas: economic recovery
and inclusive growth, health and well-being, climate and environment, quality
and good governance.
According to the award announcement on
website, Amman “has mapped available public assets and service infrastructure
to improve the city’s emergency response and infrastructure investments.”
“Amman was one of the first cities
to respond to Bloomberg Philanthropies’ call for the most innovative
cities," GAM said on its page, adding: “We are all proud and excited to
say that the city of Amman has won a prize of one million dollars in the Global
Challenge for Mayors of Cities. This award will support our idea and facilitate
its dissemination to other cities.”
