The document sparked a national debate on the reasons for the raises to the president and members of a decentralization committee, while the Cabinet insists on tightening its belts to meet a raising inflation and a growing debt.

Another leaked document showed that the government revoked the earlier one on grounds that there was “confusion.” No other details were provided.

The first document showed the Parliament’s approval to the raises in a session held on June 26. It said the increases were upon a recommendation by the Public Services, Infrastructure and Social Affairs Committee.

According to the first letter Khasawneh decided to raise promotions for the heads and members of the provincial councils approved by the Parliament Resolution No. 3263 to include providing all types of allowances, including allowances for transportations.
