In response to the directives of His Majesty
King Abdullah in August of last year, the government launched the National Food
Security Strategy 2021-2030 and its implementation plan for the years
2022-2024. The
National Food Security Strategy is the first strategy developed
for food security in Jordan, following the directives of His Majesty, aiming to
make
Jordan a regional center for food security.
Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh stated that the
government formed the
National Committee for Food Security, chaired by the
Minister of Agriculture, consisting of representatives from the public and
private sectors, donors, UN organizations, and civil society organizations. The
committee is responsible for overseeing the development of a comprehensive
national strategy for food security, defining objectives and measurable
indicators within specific time frames. The goal is also to maximize the
benefits of Jordan's relative advantages, leading to the provision of safe food
through local production or sufficient imports and ample reserves.
Earlier, His Majesty praised the contribution of the
food industry sector to the national economy, providing direct and indirect
employment opportunities and contributing to the
gross domestic product (GDP).
His Majesty emphasized the sector's importance in achieving food security in
Jordan by 2033, emphasizing that food security is an integral part of national
security.
Last October, the
Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat, also the chairman of the Food Security Council, chaired a meeting to
review progress toward establishing the National Food Security Information
System. Hneifat mentioned the formation of a technical committee to agree on
the organizational structure of the National Food Security Information System
and the tasks of all relevant parties.
