ensure water security, bridge the gap between lost and available water
quantities, reduce water loss, improve electricity efficiency, and cut
maintenance and operation costs.
He stressed the important of financial sustainability
associated with reducing expenses, including energy maintenance, and operation,
which are the most significant expenses.
He also emphasized the need to develop existing national
sources of surface or groundwater and stop wasteful pumping.
Najjar said that the national carrier, the backbone of the
national strategy, costs more than JD2 billion, and the deadline for submitting
technical and financial offers for its study has been set for the beginning of
next July.
He also mentioned that there is an expansion in sewage
projects to be used for other purposes, mainly agriculture, adding that the
efficiency of energy use costs the government an average of JD200 million
annually.
The Chairman of the Agriculture and Water Committee in the
Senate, Akif Al-Zoubi, spoke about the challenges facing the water sector,
including weak internal water sources, sudden population increase, weak
financial sustainability, lack of continuity in development efforts, and not
following pre-planned strategies or adopting new ones.
He also noted the absence of a comprehensive operational
database for the water sector to manage information and access accurate data.
He added, "There are no alternatives left for us except
to expand the experience of desalination and examine the possibility of
benefiting from deep water, and without that, we are facing an imminent threat
to the water security of our country."
